For months, Indians have been protesting over the controversial law, which gives Indian citizenship to asylum seekers from three neighboring countries — but not if they are Muslim. A number of people have died as part of the ongoing clashes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government says the new law will save religious minorities such as Hindus and Christians from persecution in neighboring Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan by offering them a path to Indian citizenship. But critics say the law, which does not make the same provision for Muslims, weakens India’s secular foundations.
Events leading up to the rioting in Delhi have strong resemblance to the carnage in Gujarat, in Bombay and in Delhi 1984. Where cops were given a free hand to enable rioters, leaders of the ruling party gave inflammatory speeches. This is all too bloody familiar.
Apartheid was a law in South Africa. But it was inhuman, immoral, unethical & evil! Just because something is legal does not mean it is necessarily right. Slavery in the USA was legal. Segregation was legal! If laws are inhuman & unethical it‘s the duty of citizens to protest and raise their voice against the oppression.
The situation in Delhi today and the conditions of Muslims in Kashmir and India is because of RSS and Hindutva policy designed by Narendra modi. From Gujarat to New Delhi. Remember Gujarat where the cops themselves set fire and enabled hate. Remember those who said, let’s forget the past, let’s give Modi a chance. This is dedicated to all of them. They have blood on their hands.
India has been sitting on an edge of a volcano for months: shrill communal rhetoric, street protests, an angry minority, a partisan state, criminal gangs, toxic propaganda. Lava has burst forth: desperately need bridge builders before it is too late.370-A diplomatic Weapon
But how can one build bridges when the PM and his party speak the language of hate all the time and where the law enforcement agencies behave like goons and where the opposition do not open its mouth to lose on Hindu votes and the top court waits for justice to come from skies?
Minorities in India are accused of instigating hate and violence but minorities never instigate a riot, they always lose out in the grim calculus of violence. It’s always the goons, the thugs of the majority who start a riot because they can loot, pillage and then get paid for their services by their political masters.
This is the reality today in India, protests, police brutality against the protesters in the world’s largest democracy. It seems like there is a bug in BJP’s ideology which doesn’t allow them to be sympathetic towards Indian minorities.
On the other hand US President is on his official visit to India, his stay has been overshadowed by deadly protests that have continued to engulf India’s capital. But the stifling situation in Delhi and held Kashmir has again been ignored by the US as what matters the most is the market, in this case a market of over a billion people.
