There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise. The whole university is deeply saddened and distressed by the death of this lovely, gentle and kind young girl.

RIP Haleema….

Buildings, classrooms, laboratories, and equipment- education infrastructure – are crucial elements of learning environments in universities. There is strong evidence that high-quality infrastructure facilitates better instruction, improves student outcomes, and reduces dropout rates, among other benefits.

However building world-class infrastructure should never be at the cost of quality education and compromising on human life. Bahria University Islamabad found itself in the race of constructing its own business school while unjustly increasing the tuition fee and transport charges. The university was in such a rush that students were pushed in the new building when the construction was not even completed.

The new building lacks basic facilities required to match the compulsory academic standards which include working electric fans, projectors in the classrooms and clean drinking water services.

The students feel the pressure when they grew up nobody asked them what their G.P.A. was, and it was ‘cool’ to work on the roof of a house. This competitive culture has significantly impacted young adults. They endlessly discuss test scores, National Merit Scholarships, reading scores, AP scholars, and comparisons to other university graduates and this is when they start losing their collective souls — and their lives to the pressures of extreme work load which is being thrust upon them by the university administrations, but do they really worry about the basic infrastructural requirements of the students? Or is just the greed of money? Is it just the voracity that they need to get on board maximum new entrants without providing them with the basic campus facilities?

Instead of working on the core issues Bahria University’s administration has been busy in crafting stone age policies in shape of separate female cafes, 6-inch rules, separate academic groups for male and female students. A university cannot build a character of a 20 year old that fail in basic teaching of subject and academic facilities? The counter voices of protestors win in ridiculousness. Their focus is on policing students rather than empowering them to think freely, to be more creative and innovative. Post secondary education standards have hit rock bottom in Pakistan and Bahria University seems to be no exception. This is what happens when you put captains of submarines and destroyers into management of university , or any other social institution for that matter leave the education management for people trained and best suited for it , not the Naval commanders

However, we need only one just punishment and the nation of cowards we are, everyone would be on path of straight and narrow. Justice should be swift and be seen. Authorities and administration should be held accountable for the loss of precious life. One can only hope that the guilty of this heinous crime will be meted out with exemplary punishment to deter this barbaric practice of giving priority of money over basic human rights. Administrative negligence should never be allowed and strong “Legal” action should be taken against it.
