The European Union Air Safety Agency has suspended Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) air operations permits for European countries for six months. As a result, all Pakistan International Airlines flights to Europe will be temporarily canceled.
The agency’s decision comes after Pakistan grounded pilots with allegedly suspicious licenses. “The airline has not been able to prove that it has effectively implemented all the elements of the safety management system required by the Chicago Convention,” Patrick Kai, executive director of IASA, wrote in a letter to Pakistan International Airlines. ‘
He further wrote that “According to the information received by Ayasa, on Wednesday, June 24, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Aviation Ghulam Sarwar Khan had informed the Pakistani Parliament that an investigation had revealed that 860 people working in Pakistan Authorities have issued licenses to more than 260 of the pilots through fraud.
Based on this information, IASA is concerned about the legitimacy of Pakistani pilots’ licenses. Confirming the move, PIA said that passengers who have a PIA reservation will have the option to advance the booking or get a refund if they wish. The PIA added that it was “in constant touch with the European Aviation Safety Agency and is taking steps to address their concerns.”
