Covid-19 rips through India

India has reported more than 300,000 coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours, the highest daily global total, while COVID-19-related deaths also jumped by a record, as a brutal second wave raises fears about the ability of the country’s health services to cope.

India’s daily jump of 314,835 cases on Thursday surpasses the previous highest one-day rise in the world of 297,430 cases posted by the United States in January.

Hospitals across northern and western India including the capital, New Delhi, have issued notices to say they have only a few hours of medical oxygen required to keep COVID-19 patients alive. More than two-thirds of hospitals had no vacant beds, according to the Delhi government’s online database and doctors advised patients to stay at home.

Across hospitals in India, families are struggling to save their loved ones due to an acute lack of oxygen supply as the country is ravaged by a deadly second wave of Covid-19.

Despite the country going through crises like never before, this BJP in state and centre is busy in publicity and PR to build their image. Modi’s image. It is important to mention that while all this was happening, the country’s Prime Minister, Home Minister and many other ministers were busy in massive election rallies. They have completely ignored the deadly Covid-19 just to win a state election.

The result of the country’s PM working hard in the 18/18 hour rally. This happens when the entire government is dependent on the guidelines of one man in this epidemic. But if that person is also full of ignorance and pride, then the destruction of the country is sure. Under BJP rule, India has lost everything moral as gangsters and Saffron thugs are running the nation.

The national capital is held hostage by an unprecedented shortage in medical oxygen and burial grounds and crematoria across the country are running out of space at a time when with the kicking off of vaccination drives worldwide, the end to the pandemic had appeared near.

Covid-19 is hitting people irrespective of religion, caste and privilege – will the death and destruction change their minds, perhaps demand more governance and accountability? Will Modi’s seeming insensitivity upset and anger them? Will they finally see that incompetence is costing lives, including their near and dear ones? We shall see, though I wouldn’t place a large bet on it.
